At Saltom you can hear echoes from our past. This section looks at people stories. What was it like to work at Saltom? What was it like when disaster struck? What was it like to live in the cottages that clustered around the pit head? What was it like to play on the beach in the years after the mine closed and before 20th century pollution spoiled it again?
Wherever possible we have used eye-witness accounts. These primary sources show what it was like in peoples own words from the time. The primary source documents are listed as “In their own words”.
The stones of Saltom’s winding house and sea wall must be soaked with human stories. Here you can read some of those echoes.
