Haig

Haig Colliery Mining Museum

Located in the engine winding house at Haig Pit, this free museum documents the long and often tragic history of mining in Whitehaven.


The Beacon

Shows the history of Whitehaven town and harbour. There is an interactive Weather Gallery on the top floor, a gift shop and cafe and a full programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year.


The Rum Story

The Dark Spirit of Whitehaven. Set in the original shop, courtyards, cellars and warehouses of the Jefferson family, this exhibition tells the story of the Rum trade which was originally centred on Whitehaven.

Whitehaven Harbour & Marina

Whitehaven's historic harbour, once one of the most important in the country, has recently been renovated and now houses a successful marina.

St Bees

The lovely coastal village of St Bees contains a Norman Priory, an easily accessible beach and one of the most important sites for seabirds in the country.

Wild Ennerdale

Wasdale and Wastwater

Wasdale, the wildest of the valleys in the Lake District contains England's deepest lake and its highest mountain.

Florence Mine Heritage Centre

The last deep working Iron Ore mine in Europe, the centre now offers a mining museum, geology and mineral room, shop, refreshment area and a research facility. Its most popular feature is the opportunity it gives the public to take a tour of some of the underground areas.

Maritime Festival

This biennial festival sees Tall Ships and enthusiasts arriving from all over the world. Over 200,000 visitors also enjoy aerial fly pasts, firework displays and concerts. The 2007 festival will be held on June 15-17.

Wordsworth House

The birthplace of William and Dorothy Wordsworth, The National Trust have recreated the environment of the 1770's to give visitors a sense of what the poet's early years were really like. Situated in Cockermouth, 13 miles from Whitehaven.

Lake District Coast Aquarium

A comprehensive display of local marine and freshwater life. The aquarium is situated on the harbour at Maryport, 14 miles from Whitehaven.

Muncaster Castle

Home to the Pennington family for 800 years, Muncaster is a popular destination for its gardens, its World Owl Centre and its programme of events including the famous 'Festival of Fools'.

Lakeland Sheep & Wool Centre

A chance to meet Cumbria's most famous residents. A show four times daily gives visitors the chance to experience 19 different breeds of live sheep and witness the skill of the sheep shearer and sheepdogs.
