C2C Cycle Route

The Sea to Sea (C2C) Cycle Route was developed by Sustrans and opened in 1994 the C2C offers a similar challenge to the Coast to Coast but for those who prefer two wheels to two feet or perhaps don't have the time to undertake the walking route. Running from Whitehaven in the west to Sunderland in the east, the C2C is 140 miles long and keeps primarily to minor roads, cycle paths and off road tracks. Although seriously challenging in places the ride is completed by 12,000 -15,000 people per year, many of them recreational cyclists and not just the committed and lycra clad.

An alternative route is offered by the newly opened Hadrian's Cycleway which starts at Ravenglass, south of Whitehaven and follows Hadrian's Wall across the country to South Shields. If you are feeling particularly fit then a return journey can be made along the Reivers Cycle Route which returns to Whitehaven via Kielder Water and a short trip into Scotland.
