The Lake District and Cumbria has long been known as one of the finest areas to cycle in the world and the Western Lakes offer possibly the best cycling in the region. Stunning landscapes and secluded country lanes leading to picture postcard villages and some of the toughest and most iconic climbs in the country with the Passes at Honister, Newlands, Hard Knott and Wrynose. Best of all though, all this can be enjoyed without the levels of traffic that can afflict other parts of the Lake District.
Whitehaven has its own cycling 'claim to fame' as the start of the Sea to Sea (C2C) across country cycle route. It's traditional to dip the back wheel of your bicycle in the Irish Sea at Whitehaven and dip your front wheel in the North Sea after completing the ride in Robin Hood Bay.
The newly opened Hadrians Cycleway crosses the country, but this time by following the line of Hadrians Wall and also passes through Whitehaven.
One of the proposals for the Whitehaven coast is to improve the facilities for cycling by providing a network of cycle paths that will take the rider away from the roads and allow them to cycle along the clifftops overlooking the sea. It is hoped that when this network of paths is completed it will eventually form a new part of the Hadrians Cycleway. Maps showing the proposed new cycle route along the Whitehaven coast are available to view in the Project section.
